In the world of content creation, regardless of if your method of distribution is written or video, one rule remains the same: it is very easy to fuck up the smallest things.

Bandai Namco announced Super Robot Wars Y at the Nintendo Direct on March 27, and the full announcement video was later uploaded to Bandai Namco’s regional channels. The video was also uploaded to PlayStation’s YouTube channel, as many Bandai Namco videos are, but the thumbnail was noticeably different. While Bandai’s uploads use an image with the game’s logo, PlayStation’s upload features a 30th anniversary Gundam Wing image. (Updated 3/28: PlayStation has changed the thumbnail to the Super Robot Wars Y logo.)

For those who are unaware, the Super Robot Wars series primarily uses SD (super deformed) designs in the mainline games. That Gundam Wing image is… clearly not that, and is therefore unrelated to Super Robot Wars Y. (Note: This doesn’t mean Gundam Wing won’t make it into SRWY.)

So if the image PlayStation has isn’t for Super Robot Wars Y, what could it be for? I’ve got two guesses.

  1. Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation 2 will receive the XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero and OZ-13MS Gundam Epyon in a future update. GBO2 already has broken their unspoken rule of staying within the Universal Century twice by adding Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and Mobile Fighter G Gundam units to tie into SEED Freedom’s premiere and G Gundam’s 35th anniversary, so adding another non-UC Gundam in its anniversary year isn’t impossible.
  2. A new Gundam Wing game is in development. Bandai’s no stranger to anniversary projects (One Piece World Seeker and One Piece Odyssey, Naruto x Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections, Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet and Sword Art Online: Last Recollection, both versions of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle, etc.), and Wing is one of the more popular series outside Japan. Bandai has also had multiple Gundam console games in development at the same time; Gundam Breaker 3 and SD Gundam: G Generation Genesis released in the same year, New Gundam Breaker and Battle Operation 2 released in the same year, Gundam Evolution and SD Gundam Battle Alliance released in the same year, and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: Battle Destiny Remastered is in development at the same time as another Gundam SEED game.

Time will tell which outcome is real, but I’m putting money on Gundam Wing coming to GBO2 just because the image looks like GBO2 promo art.

Various examples of GBO2 art, for comparison.

UPDATED 4/1/25: Bandai Namco has now officially revealed the leaked image as a just a 30th anniversary promo for Gundam Wing. Wing Gundam Zero has also been confirmed to be coming to GBO2 on PC, but Epyon doesn’t seem to be joining it.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation 2 is available for PlayStation and PC (via Steam). Super Robot Wars Y will launch worldwide in 2025 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC (via Steam).
