MAGES. has announced their streaming and video posting guidelines for Rent-a-Girlfriend: The Horizon Line and Her in a Swimsuit. In short, don’t do it.

ROCC TALK: This Isn’t Surprising

MAGES.’s stance on people uploading footage of their adventure games/visual novels to social media has been the same for years. When I reached out to them in 2023 to peacefully resolve a copyright strike, they told me that due to the nature of these games (many have branching paths and multiple endings) and since they can’t control how many people see that footage, they don’t want any of it up at all and will send copyright takedowns for any footage they find—immediate takedown for newer games and scheduled (one-week notice) takedowns for games more than a year old. MAGES. producer Chiyomaru Shikura himself has even filed a takedown for a company-approved stream of Anonymous;Code by HOLOSTARS V-Tuber Minase Rio.

To date, MAGES. has come after me for:

  • The Quintessential Quintuplets: Memories of a Quintessential Summer
  • The Quintessential Quintuplets: Five Memories Spent With You
  • NEW GAME! The Challenge Stage!
  • Laid-Back Camp: Have a nice day!
  • Infinite Stratos 2: Ignition Hearts
  • Summer Time Rendering: Another Horizon
  • KonoSuba: Love for These Clothes of Desire!

I noticed, however, that MAGES.’s “no uploads” policy only applies to Japan; my footage of Punch Line, Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness, and my spite playthroughs of the entire Miku route in both Memories of a Quintessential Summer and Five Memories Spent With You remained untouched.

I’m sure MAGES. will continue to nuke any and all footage of their games that don’t leave Japan, so I recommend creators skip those games for the sake of channels.

Rent-a-Girlfriend: The Horizon Line and Her in a Swimsuit is available for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in Japan. Spike Chunsoft will likely bring the game to the West within a year and a half, and I’ll have a full playthrough of the Ruka route shortly after.
